Lois Sofia, arrested for calling BJP govt. ‘fascist’, gets bail after initial aggetation from Tamilisai Soundarajan

Lois Sofia, the research scholar from Canada who was on Monday arrested for sloganeering against the BJP on a flight, in which BJP State president Tamilisai Soundararajan was present, was granted bail on Tuesday.

She was booked under sections 505(1) (b) (Intent to cause fear or alarm) and 290 (Public nuisance) of the IPC and Section 75(1) (c) (Impolite reply to public servant) of the Tamilnadu City Police Act by the Pudukottaki all-woman police. However, the Magistrate had struck down the charge booked under Section 505(1) (b) while remanding her in judicial custody for 15 days.

Ms. Sofia was admitted to the Thoothukudi Medical College Hospital on Monday night after she complained that she was unwell.

After Sofia was taken into custody, DMK president M.K. Stalin tweeted that he too would say, “Down with BJP’s fascist regime” and demanded her immediate release.
